ELECTRIC VEHICLE LAWS

what licence do i need?

One of the most commonly asked questions is what licence do i need when buying an Electric Motorcycle or Moped. For those looking at whats about on the market there’s a lot of confusion surrounding the current UK laws, however the law on what licence you are required to have compared to the bike you want is fairly straight forward. In this section we have simplified some of the main points so you dont get caught out and if you need further clarity, just give the team a call and they will be happy to guide you.

what are the differences?

Electric Mopeds

Electric Motorcycles

Electric motorcycles and mopeds that are restricted to 28mph can be ridden with a CBT licence, a full Motorcycle licence or a full car driving licence if you passed before February 1st 2001.

Electric Motorcycles

Electric motorcycles and mopeds that can go over  28mph+ will require a CBT

Top speed: 28mph+

motor: Twist & Go

Licence required: CBT or full motorcycle Licence

Engine equivalant: 125cc +

Electric Moped

To make comparisson easier Electric Mopeds are very similar to other 50cc petrol mopeds. The Mopeds can be ridden by any rider 16 or over who has either passed a CBT course or has category AM or P on their existing drivers licence. The Super Soco CUX, TS, TC and TC Max  fall into this category as well as other specific Zero models.

People who have passed their test before 1st February 2001 in most cases will have the category AM or P already on their licence, or have already passed their full motorcycle test are not required to take a CBT course

Electric scooters / motorbikes that are capable of speeds in excess of 28mph / 45kmph are classed as L3e-A1. There is no speed restriction however you must be 17 or above and have passed a CBT course OR have a full motorcycle licence.

If you are in any doubt to what you can ride on your licence Please reffer to the government website here.

Electric Motorbike

Electric Motorcycles and Mopeds that have a maximum speed of over 28mph are classed under A1 A2 and A licences. The maximum speed has no restriction in place but law states you must be 17 years of age or above and passed a CBT course OR have a full Motorcycle license.

If you are in any doubt to what you can ride on your licence Please reffer to the government website here.

can I ride with a full car licence?

This is a commonly asked question and can lead to trouble with the law if not abided by. If you have passed your licence before 1st February 2001, you can ride any moped up to 50cc / 4kW without L plates.  If you are looking for something else with more power, you will need to take your CBT.

The Super Soco TC  and CUX can be purchased, these are restricted to 28mph. Once you have passed your CBT and provided the relevant CBT creditation we can de-restrict your Electric motorcycle or moped so you can really get the most out of your Motorcycle.

Anyone who gained their licence after 1st February 2001, will need to take Compulsory Basic Training (CBT).

where can i take my cbt?

Compulsory basic training (CBT) is a course you usually have to take before you ride a moped or motorcycle on the road.

The training makes sure you can ride safely on your own while you practise for your full moped or motorcycle test.

Many places offer CBT courses accross the country, the best way to find the closest is through  https://www.gov.uk/find-motorcycle-training this will allow you to put in your postcode and a number of centres will be listed in the area.

After you’ve completed CBT, you can ride a:

  • moped if you’re 16 or over
  • motorcycle up to 125cc and with a power output of up to 11kW if you’re 17 or over

You must use L plates (L or D plates in Wales).

You must pass your full moped or motorcycle test within 2 years, or you have to either take CBT again or stop riding.
